Writing to Elected Officials
Tell DEC and Governor Hochul that the Dunn Landfill does not belong in a heavily populated area next to a public school.
Some impacts of this landfill:
This huge 99 -acre industrial operation is right next to a large school district campus housing over 1,100 students and hundreds of teachers and other school staff.
Up to 100 long-haul tractor trailer trucks from seven states travel each weekday over our highways to dump their loads in Rensselaer.
These trucks roar through residential neighborhoods in the city of Rensselaer from 6:40 am to late afternoon, disturbing the peace, spewing diesel exhaust and tying up traffic.
Foul-smelling hydrogen sulfide gas assaults the nostrils of residents, schoolchildren and school staff.
All of these issues create health hazards and negatively impact quality of life for the people of Rensselaer and neighboring East Greenbush.
Significant levels of PFAS chemicals have been found in the landfill leachate. Millions of gallons of this leachate is discharged untreated each year into the Hudson River, potentially affecting the seven communities downstream from Albany that draw their drinking water from the river.
The permit for the dump expired on July 19, 2022 and the facility continues to operate while the application is under review and has the capacity to continue operating through 2036 or beyond. The people of Rensselaer and East Greenbush are tired of having their lives disrupted by the dump. They deserve better. The dump should be closed and remediated.

COMPLAIN ABOUT THE DUNN LANDFILL

Complaints, records of them and other essential information you have concerning the impact of the Dunn Landfill needs to be forwarded to the right people. This will be reviewed by NYSDEC once the application for the renewal of the operating permit is being judged by the agency.
If you make a phone call complaining, you need to follow that up with an email to the correct party, so you have a record of the complaint. If the complaint email is not directly to DEC, you should copy them in with the emails listed below. If you don’t use emails, you can call REC at 518-227-1570 and leave a message with the details and we will email it for you.

COMPLAIN at formal hearings. Within the next few months you will have the opportunity to complain during the formal permit renewal process. Anyone regardless of where they live can participate. We will have that information on our website which you can access at stopdunn.org
The Dunn Landfill will be required to publicize this information with various media 30 days before the process starts. It will also be posted at the NYSDEC site. Simply do a search for NYSDEC Dunn Landfill.
